Readers are Leaders

Readers are Leaders is our school-wide K-5 reading incentive program to encourage reading
 at all levels.  Students read books and then successfully complete Reading Counts quizzes,  
written quizzes, or teacher approved projects to earn credit for reading the books.

Goals and Incentives

Level 1: Two Books (All Grades)
Pencil and your name on the Readers Are Leaders bulletin board

Level 2: Ten Books (Grades K-2), Five Books (Grades 3-5)
String bookmark and your name on the bulletin board

Level 3: Twenty Books (Grades K-2), Ten Books (Grades 3-5)
50¢ coupon to the school store and your name on the bulletin board 

Level 4: Thirty Books (Grades K-2), Fifteen Books (Grades 3-5)
75¢ coupon to the school store and your name on the bulletin board 

Level 5: Fifty Books (Grades K-2), Twenty-five Books (Grades 3-5)
Readers Are Leaders Blue T-Shirt or a book from the media center and your name on the bulletin board in the lobby

Rules and Procedures

  • Teachers approve the level of the books that students read.

  • For grades 3-5, books over 250 pages count as an additional book for each 250 pages.

  • Students must demonstrate an understanding of the story read through some task other than just a signature or a title and date in order for the book to count toward incentives.

  • Teachers will determine the ways students may demonstrate understanding of the story which can include Reading Counts! quizzes, Readers Are Leaders written quizzes, projects, reports, etc.

  • As students reach the above levels, teachers will submit the Readers Are Leaders sheets to the Celebrate Reading Committee.

  • Kindergarten and first grade students can do Reading Counts! books as a whole class, with an assistant or parent volunteer. Books and quizzes can be read aloud to non-readers.

  • Students keep track of books read in their Data Notebooks using sheets.
